We often do this completely unconsciously \u2013 by sending photos, posting comments on social media, or logging into various services. That\u2019s why it\u2019s worth knowing what information about us is key and could be misused, as well as how to protect ourselves and our privacy.<\/p>\n<p>What is sensitive data and why is it important to protect it?<\/p>\n<p>Sensitive data is any information that allows others to identify us or reveals details about our private lives. Some data is quite obvious, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>full name;<\/li>\n<li>personal identification number (PESEL);<\/li>\n<li>home address;<\/li>\n<li>telephone number;<\/li>\n<li>date of birth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, there is a certain category of data which, from the user\u2019s point of view, is less obvious, and sharing it does not cause us any concern. These include, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>photos of our flat;<\/li>\n<li>photos of our family;<\/li>\n<li>a ticket or boarding pass;<\/li>\n<li>a bank transfer confirmation;<\/li>\n<li>information about travel plans (\u201cWe\u2019re all flying off on holiday tomorrow!\u201d);<br \/>comments on social media in which we disclose health details (e.g. \u201cBack home after the operation, resting now\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Such data, even taken individually, can be exploited by fraudsters, for example, to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>impersonate us;<\/li>\n<li>reveal when we are not at home or are on our own;<\/li>\n<li>disclose our address or telephone number;<\/li>\n<li>help a criminal make a fake message to family members seem credible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s always worth thinking carefully about what we share, with whom, and whether it\u2019s absolutely necessary. Fraudsters don\u2019t need full details about us. Just a few bits of information are enough to create a credible story or a fake profile. A good tip?
