December is a time for pre-Christmas shopping and increased online activity – unfortunately, it’s also a period when online fraudsters step up their activities. Among the most common threats are phishing (impersonating banks, courier companies or shops) and fake promotions and ‘bargains’ designed to trick people into clicking on a suspicious link or providing their details. Older people are often targeted by such attacks, which is why digital security is particularly important at this time of year.
The first online course is now available on the SILWERS project website: ‘Phishing – don’t fall for online scammers!’. The course is currently available in two languages – Polish and English – but further language versions (Greek, Icelandic and Czech) will be released shortly to support the widest possible audience in building digital security.
Phishing is one of the most common methods of stealing data and money online – fraudsters impersonate trusted organisations or individuals, using emails, text messages, instant messaging apps or fake websites. In the course, we show you how to recognise typical warning signs, how to verify messages and links, and what simple habits can improve your security on a daily basis. The material is practical and focused on real-life situations that users may encounter when using digital services.
