When should we trust AI and social media, and when should we keep our distance?

Tamper-proofing

When it comes to protecting yourself against manipulation, the best approach is a simple procedure that you can follow whenever content stirs up emotions or seems suspicious.

The first step is to pause and give yourself a moment.

The second step is to check the source: who published it, whether it’s a well-known account, and whether the content refers to a reliable source.

The third step is to decide whether it is worth responding at all, and if so, how.

If the content encourages you to share it immediately, asks you to click on a link or triggers intense fear, it is worth adopting the principle of verifying it first and only then taking action. It is good practice to cross-check the information against at least two independent sources. In many cases, this alone is enough to realise that the content is exaggerated, taken out of context or simply false.

To protect yourself, it is worth using the tools provided by the platforms themselves. If you see content that raises suspicions, you can usually hide it, ask to see fewer similar posts, and block the author so that they do not appear in your feed in future. You can also report the post to the platform’s moderators. Reporting is particularly important when the content appears to be fake news, harassment, fraud or deliberate manipulation.

It is also helpful to look at the author’s profile. It is worth checking whether the account has a history, whether it publishes consistent content, whether it appears to be a real person or a genuine organisation, and whether it was created recently and is mass-posting very similar entries. This does not provide 100 per cent certainty, but it often helps to identify accounts that are part of automated content distribution.

For older people, establishing a simple family rule can also be particularly helpful. If a piece of information causes significant concern, it is worth discussing it with a loved one before deciding whether to share it or accept it as true.
