Knowledge is your superpower, not something to be afraid of

When you read about just how sophisticated scams can be, you might get the impression that the online world has become a minefield. However, it’s worth looking at it from another angle:

• You’re not a target 24/7 – most of us won’t encounter a sophisticated deepfake attack in our day-to-day lives. Scammers often look for ‘easy targets’, and your new knowledge means you’re no longer one.
• Technology isn’t inherently evil – artificial intelligence gives us easier and faster access to information. Like any tool, it can cause harm if used carelessly, but in the right hands it brings many benefits.
• Caution is a habit, like fastening your seatbelt – knowing that deepfakes exist is like fastening your seatbelt in the car. We don’t do it because we expect an accident every minute, but to travel more calmly and safely.

Remember that cybercriminals are counting on your ignorance and surprise. Because you already know how their tricks work, you have the upper hand. You can continue to enjoy connecting with your loved ones and keeping up with the latest tech, whilst keeping the principle of limited trust in the back of your mind.
